When Should You Worry About Low Back Pain? A Real Answer - Tualatin, OR
Updated: Apr 15
“Is this something serious?”
That’s usually the first question people ask when back pain hits.
And it makes sense...back pain can feel intense, limiting, and honestly… a little scary.
But here’s the truth:
Most low back pain is not dangerous and improves with the right approach.
When back pain is usually NOT something to worry about
In most cases, back pain:
Comes on suddenly or gradually
Feels worse with certain movements
Improves with some positions and worsens with others
This is very normal
Your back is strong, adaptable, and built for movement.
When you SHOULD pay attention
There are a few situations where it’s worth getting checked out sooner:
Pain that doesn’t improve over time
Pain that is getting significantly worse
Difficulty with normal daily activities
Pain that travels down the leg and doesn’t change
These don’t automatically mean something serious...but they do mean you should get guidance from a licensed healthcare provider.
What actually helps low back pain
1. Movement (not bed rest)
Old advice said to rest and "pull your belly in to stabilize the core."
New evidence says: Movement helps recovery...and relax the belly! The spine is strong and does not need you to contract all day long. Allow it to move...motion is lotion...you get the idea.
Even small amounts matter.
2. Gradual return to activity
Avoid the “all or nothing” trap.
Instead:
Ease back into movement.
Build tolerance over time.
Think of "capacity"... if our back hasn't done much activity, we can quickly exceed the capacity. Therefore, a lot more success over time when we build this up gradually.
3. Strength and confidence
Your body adapts when you give it the right stimulus.
Strength + confidence = long-term relief
The biggest myth about back pain
“I must have done something wrong.”
Not true.
Back pain can happen without a clear cause...and that doesn’t mean your body is fragile or broken.
Why back pain keeps coming back
It’s not because your back is “weak.”
It’s usually because:
You didn’t get a clear plan
You avoided movement too long
You never rebuilt confidence in your body
