Why Rest Alone Doesn’t Fix Running Injuries - Tualatin, OR

“If I just rest it, it should go away… right?”
It’s one of the most common strategies runners try...and one of the most frustrating when it doesn’t work.
Because for many people, it does feel better… at first.
You take a few days off. Maybe even a couple weeks. The pain settles down. Things feel promising.
And then you go back to running...and it’s right there again.
This is where a lot of runners get stuck.
Not because they’re doing something wrong, but because they’ve been given incomplete advice.
Rest can absolutely help calm symptoms.
But it doesn’t improve your body’s ability to handle the demands of running.
Most running injury recovery that we see in Tualatin isn’t about removing stress forever.
It’s about preparing your body to tolerate it better.
That’s a very different goal.
If we go back to the idea of load and capacity mentioned over the last few blog posts (check it out here!) , rest temporarily reduces load.
But it doesn’t build capacity.
So when you return to the same mileage, pace, or intensity as before… you’re right back where you started.
This is why a more effective approach usually involves some combination of:
-Adjusting your running (not eliminating it completely).
-Gradually reintroducing load.
-Building strength in the tissues that need it
It’s not about doing nothing.
It’s about doing the right amount of the right things.
If you’re currently dealing with something, it doesn’t mean you have to hit pause on everything.
In many cases, there’s a way to keep you moving while we work on what’s underneath it.
If you haven’t yet, we’d recommend starting with our blog on Should You Run Through Pain? and our breakdown of the Top Running Injuries in Tualatin. They’ll give you a better framework for understanding what’s happening.
At Elevate PT, we work with runners to build a plan that actually progresses...not just temporarily relieves symptoms.
Because the goal isn’t just to feel better for a week.
It’s to stay better while you keep doing what you love.
If you’ve tried resting and feel like you’re going in circles, let’s change the approach.
